- Are you born with thin lips or are you experiencing age-related lip shrinkage and is this affecting the beauty of your face?
- Do you know that even newborn children prefer people with larger, more voluptuous lips?
- Do you know larger, more beautiful lips can make you appear more generous or kinder?
- Is your face not visually appealing due to your thin lips?
- Do you want your lips to be aesthetically pleasing?
- Have you been thinking about lip enhancement?
Then you have been thinking right! Lip augmentation will restore the beauty of your face by lip enlargement and lip contouring, in an aesthetic manner.
Lip augmentation is aimed at improving the appearance of lips, through the use of cosmetic surgery or non-surgical techniques. Lip enlargement is recommended for people having thin lips by birth, who want to enhance the beauty of their face by lip enhancement. Only one lip can be treated or both lips may be enlarged in the same treatment, depending on the requirement.Lip enlargement is done by delivering injection into the lips or by lip implant. Lip augmentation can make the lips look fuller, adding to the beauty of the face, since lips are a prominent part of the face. A variety of natural and synthetic materials are available for reshaping lips by augmentation.
Methods of Lip Augmentation
Lip augmentation can be achieved through dermal filler injections like Restylane or Juvedermor lip implants. Temporary lip enhancement by injection used to be done using collagen- a material found in animal connective tissues. Collagen is however known to trigger allergic reactions in some candidates, hence sensitivity test had to be performed before treatment. An ultra-fine needle used to be used to deliver collagen into the lip and the procedure of injection was repeated (1-3 months), since collagen is absorbed by the body. Fat harvested from another part of the candidate’s body also used to be popular as an alternative to collagen – This was non-allergic since the material is derived from the same person’s body, but fat has a mind of its own and is not recommended anymore, since it can disappear unpredictably, become lumpy, etc. After all, who would want lumpy lips? Another non-allergic injection is autologen (injectable material- like collagen- taken from the same person’s skin). Other injections are also available such as artecoll (made of tiny synthetic beads), dermalogen (dermal material) and HylaForm (based on hyaluronic acid).
The commonest and safest method of lip enhancement nowadays is using the hyaluronic acid dermal filler injections like Juvederm and Restylane (lip filler injections). These dermal fillers are made artificially using genetic engineering, so there is no scope of allergic reactions. Also, since these are made of hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid is the basic sub-unit of collagen, which naturally forms our lips), they feel and look completely natural in your lips. Juvederm and Restylane both behave predictably and can be used to plump and contour the lips easily. These lip fillers are minimally invasive, such that post Juvederm or Restylane treatment, you cannot even tell the next day that a procedure has been performed. Most importantly, both Juvederm&Restylane (and other hyaluronic acid filler injections like Esthelis and Perlane) are completely reversible – If you do not like your lips post the procedure, a small injection of another material called hyluronidasecan completely dissolve the lip fillers in your lips, within minutes. The only problem with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers injections like Juvederm & Restylane(lip fillers) is that they need repeat injections as they get absorbed by the body –Restylanegets absorbed in about 6 – 9 months and juvederms lasts for approximately 12 – 18 months in your lips.

In lip implant procedure, synthetic or organic material is implanted into the lips under the application of topical anesthesia. The most common material is alloderm- consisting of dermis (natural). By making incisions in the inside corners of the mouth, the material is inserted under local anesthesia and it eventually integrates into the natural body tissue. A synthetic implant (GORE-TEX® implant) is a high quality ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) – a non-reactive material used in raincoats and tents. This material may be permanently integrated, yet does not always feel totally natural. After implantation, the incision sites are sutured using absorbing or non-absorbing material. Lip implants, however, need repeat surgery to remove them, if you do not like the effect, unlike fillers like Juvederm & Restylane which can just be dissolved.
Recovery, after injection, may takea maximum of 1 – 2 days. Usually hours are enough for recovery. For lip implants, the recovery time is 1-2 weeks; drooling and temporary stiffness of the lips may be experienced during the recovery period.
FAQs (Frequently Ask Question)
What are the risks associated with lip augmentation?
Yes, some risks are linked with lip enhancement. An allergic reaction may occur in response to lip implant. Bleeding or hardening of the implant may occur that may necessitate the removal of the lip implant. Other complications include infection and nerve damage.
How can a faster recovery be achieved after lip implant?
For faster recovery:ice packs can be kept aligned with the lips for some hours after implants and lip fillers, limited talking and chewing for some hours is recommended, avoiding weight training and running exercise the evening post lip fillers and using antibiotics to prevent lip infections (more in case of lip implant surgery).
Are there any alternatives to lip filler injections or lip implants?
Some non-surgical alternatives to lip injections and implants include the use of lip plumper and suction pumps. Lip plumpers works by irritating the skin of lips to make it swell temporarily, thereby enhancing the appearance of the lips. Suction pumps use vacuum to increase blood pressure in lips to increase their size. Both of these are temporary and cause effects lasting from a few minutes to hours at best.
What health conditions are not suitable for lip augmentation?
Lip fillers are safe in most patients. We recommend stopping multi-vitamin tablets (especially Vitamin E) in patients, to minimize the chances of bruising post procedure.
