Facial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained to address alterations of
the normal anatomy of the face, orbit, and eyelid caused by trauma and
other accidents. Each accident is unique and each requires a customized
approach to rehabilitation. At the Center for Facial Trauma at the
Esthetic Clinic, Dr. Shome is an expert on repair of all eyelid,
orbital and facial abnormalities and all abnormalities of the eye
socket caused by trauma.
Insult to the facial skeleton is a devastating result of low-, medium-,
or high-velocity trauma. Orbital floor fractures can occur as isolated
injuries or in combination with extensive facial bony disruption. Floor
fractures may occur in combination with zygomatic arch fractures, Le
Fort type II or III midface fractures, and medial wall or orbital rim
fractures.
Technological strides in radiologic modalities and surgical technique
have resulted in improved diagnostic and management capabilities. The
goal of treatment by Dr. Shome is to maintain or restore the best
possible physiologic function and aesthetic appearance to the area of
injury. A conservative approach may be warranted in some instances,
whereas more invasive and aggressive intervention may be necessary in
other situations. Dr. Shome treats both ‘hot’ trauma – early trauma
presenting immediately after accidents etc to the emergency room - as
well as ‘cold trauma’ – late repair post initial unsatisfactory repair.
The Esthetic Clinic has great experience treating both the acute
effects of trauma and late term effects of trauma that might include
scars, deformed eyelids, sunken eye sockets, facial abnormalities,
asymmetry of the face, jaw abnormalities, double vision, or tearing.
