Alopecia Areata – Spot baldness
What is Alopecia areata?
It is a condition where hair are lost from the scalp in patches, at times it may even affect other areas of the body. Hair loss tends to be rather rapid. Alopecia Areata affects both men and women.
What are the probable causes of Alopecia Areata?
Latest research studies suggest that alopecia Areata is caused as a result of an abnormality in the immune system. The hair follicles get attacked by the body’s immune system and normal hair production is disrupted. The reason for which remains idiopathic. Sometimes, Alopecia Areata may be linked with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, allergic disorders, vitiligo, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus,.
Alopecia areata can occur in three different patterns:
- The most common pattern being, hair loss in one or more spots on the scalp
- Often times, all the hair on the scalp are lost, the condition is then referred to as alopecia totalis.
In few cases, all the hair on the whole of the body are lost, this condition is termed as alopecia universalis.
Alopecia Areata progressing to Alopecia Totalis
Who are most likely to get affected by Spot baldness?
Alopecia Areata tends to affect most commonly the children and young adults. However, it can also impact elderly people.
Diagnosis of alopecia areata:
Short, broken off hair that appear narrow closer to the scalp (resembling an exclamation mark), is the key finding of Alopecia areata. To make the diagnosis, a biopsy of the scalp may prove to be beneficial.
What are the treatment options for Alopecia areata?
In about 50% of cases, hair will grow again within a year without any treatment. The longer the time period of hair loss, the less likelihood that the hair will grow again.
Patients with Alopecia areata are treated with either immune-modulating therapies, such as topical immunotherapy, glucocorticoids, or biologic-response modifiers like minoxidil, or anthralin, ,. Hair growth is triggered by these treatments but hair loss may not be prevented and probably the course of the disease is not influenced. Treatment may take months or years. The choice of therapy is dependent chiefly upon the patient’s age and the extent of the hair loss. Mild cases of hair loss respond excellently to treatment. However, in individuals with complete loss of hair, no treatment works. Hair follicles are not destroyed in patients with alopecia areata, and the potential for regrowth always remains.
Role of diet in preventing hair loss:
New hiar growth stimulation using natural remedies is only one part of treating and healing alopecia areata. You should keep in mind that beneath these bald patches lays a deeper problem. This is none other than the faulty immune system. It is important to keep the immune system balanced and calm in order to stop the severity and progression of the condition. This requires making necessary changes in your diet and regimen.
The chief ingredients of diet would include reducing inflammation, spotting and avoiding allergens, spotting and rectifying deficiencies, nourishment of body using a variety of foods that are rich in nutrients, and maintaining healthy intestinal flora.
Consuming a huge amount of natural, nutrient-rich food, containing plenty of vegetables and fruits will assure adequate nutrition, fullness, and satisfaction with the minimal amount of calories.
What could be the cost of treating Alopecia areata?
The price of the treatment is dependent on the mode of treatment that is administered. In general, a consultation with a Skin Specialist or a Trichologist (Hair Specialist) would cost about INR 1000/-.
