Lacrimal Surgery Explained

Our eyes are one of the most important parts of our bodies. It is through our eyes that we are able to see the world we are living in, with all its beauty and everything it has to offer. However, like all the other parts of the body, catching infections, getting injuries and traumas are inevitable.

Lacrimal, which is the system responsible for producing and draining tears, is one area of concern. When it gets affected and can’t perform its function to the maximum, lacrimal surgery, done at The Esthetic Clinics, can help restore its functionality.

What is lacrimal surgery?

Lacrimal surgery is a procedure performed on the lacrimal system to address different issues and conditions that hinder the system from performing its functions to their maximum. These issues may include:

Blocked tear duct; factors such as inflammation, infections, and anatomical abnormalities could block the tear ducts. A person with this condition may experience symptoms such as excessive tearing, eye irritation, and a potential infection.

Tearing disorders: tearing disorders could involve insufficient tear production or excessive evaporation of tears, which can cause dry eye syndrome that may be characterized by eye discomfort, redness, and blurry vision.

Lacrimal system infections; lacrimal surgery procedures can also treat lacrimal system infections and relieve a patient from symptoms such as pain, swelling, discharge, and severe eye irritation.

Epiphora, is a condition that causes an excessive and constant overflow of tears.

Lacrimal surgery procedures and treatments

Some of the most common eye treatments are eye drops, warm compresses, and antibiotics. When these don’t work, it is crucial to seek advanced treatments like lacrimal surgery from a reputable lacrimal surgery clinic.

Different patients can opt for different lacrimal surgery procedures, such as:

DCR (Dacryocystorhinostomy) surgeries are performed in the case of blocked tear ducts. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a new pathway for tears to drain directly into the nasal cavity without passing through the blocked ducts. It can be performed through different techniques, including traditional surgeries as well as less invasive techniques such as endoscopic procedures.

Punctal plugs: Punctal plugs are used in the case of excessive tear drainage. As the name suggests, the plugs are made of tiny silicon or gel and inserted into the puncta to prevent fast tear drainage. This provides relief from dry eye syndrome by retaining the tears on the surface of the eyes.

Canalicular repair: canalicular repair is a procedure done to address issues on the canaliculi. These are narrow canals that carry tears from the puncta to the tear sac.

Lacrimal system probing and irrigation: this procedure is usually done on infants and babies with congenital blocked tear ducts to open the blocked duct and restore normal tear drainage.

Conclusion

The lacrimal system is made up of multiple different components that are essential for the proper functioning of the eyes. These components are in charge of the production, distribution, and drainage of tears.

If the system fails, seeking help from a lacrimal surgery specialist like Dr. Debraj Shome in India is necessary. The surgeon can help deal with lacrimal disorders, relieve the patient from pain and discomfort, and restore the proper functionality of the eyes.
