Basal Cell Carcinoma

  • Do you have growths or masses on your skin that look like they have been growing and whichwon’t heal?
  • Does this skin growth contain blood vessels in or around it?
  • Do the sores or skin moles look as if they would bleed easily?
  • Are the growths pink, brown or black in color and shiny?
  • Do these growthsbleed or scare you?
  • Do you want them out of your life to restore your clean, beautiful skin?

Then you ought to get this growth diagnosed, since these symptoms may correspond to basal cell carcinoma. You need to consult a facial plastic surgeon and access the proper treatment of it.

What is Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is an epithelial cancer that occurs in cells in the deepest layer of the epidermisof the skin – the basal cells. The cancer can grow in the areas of the skin that are excessively exposed to the sunlight. This cancer does not usually spread to other parts of the body (i.e. is not metastasized) to become life threatening, yet it can bring about significant destruction of the surrounding tissues. For the diagnosis of this cancer, various techniques of biopsy (incisional as well as excisional biopsy) can be used and histological studies can be performed.

Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment method

Surgical methods for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (i.e. basal skin cancer surgery) include either standard surgical excision or Mohs surgery.

Standard excision removes the area containing cancerous growthin the surrounding normal growth region using a scalpel. The procedure is performed, after application of an anesthetic. The skin is stitched for recovery and the excised section is examined microscopically to ensure the removal of all malignant cells. This technique is less effective in comparison to Mohs technique and chances of cancer recurrence are more.

Mohs surgery entails removal of cancer with a thin layer of surrounding tissue and thorough examination of the tissue under microscope. The process of tissue removal and examination is repeated, until no more cancer cells are detected in the depth or the peripheries of the area. This technique has the highest cure rate and ensures minimal removal of the normal skin area, thereby reducing post-operative side effects and morbidity and assisting repair. Afterwards the wound is treatedthrough plastic surgery (primary wound closure through primary intent) or allowed to heal on its own (heal via granulation tissue or secondary intent).

Recovery after surgery

After basal skin cancer surgery, some days are needed for recovery of skin and removal of stitches. Recovery time depends on the area of cancerous growth removed in the surgery. The recovery process is not that painful and requires no medication for pain. Some drugs may be taken in case the pain builds up.There are, however, some activity precautions like avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting.

FAQs (Frequently Ask Question)

What are the risk factors of basal cell carcinoma?

One of the common factors is exposure to the sunlight. Other possible factors include arsenic exposure, complicated burns, scars, vaccinations, infections and certain chronic inflammatory skin conditions.

What are the manifestations of basal cell carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma causes a variety of symptoms, but the most common manifestations include formation of areddish nodule on the eyelid (commonly on lower eyelid toward the nose). The cancer looks like open sores, red patches, scar like area or pink growth. Although this cancer rarely metastasizes, the loss of eye lashes around the growth indicates that the cancer is malignant.

What is the growth rate of basal cell carcinoma?

The growth rate of basal cell carcinoma is generally low, i.e. 2-3mm over 2-3 months and this cancer is rarely metastasized. The portion of tumor visible on the skin surface does not indicate what is going on under the skin, the point being, a larger area might have been destroyed underneath the skin while you see a small part of it on the skin surface. That is why this cancer is also called a rodent ulcer – since it burrows and destroys the underlying skin like a rodent.

What is the risk of recurrence of this disease?

The cancer, once cured in a patient, can reoccur in the same area or a different part of the skin. So even after treatment, the person should pay regular visits to the Plastic surgeon and a different therapy then can be used for the reoccurred cancer.

Are there any non-surgical methods of basal cell carcinoma therapy?

Yes, some non-surgical methods do work for therapy of the cancer. Cryotherapy (freezing the skin), Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, Photodynamic therapy and radiation therapy are some of the available options. However, the best treatment for basal cell cancer is to remove it surgically.

Basal cell carcinoma is one such type of skin cancer that affects the skin. Removal of the affected skin is possible using surgery, and the area can be reconstructed to look normal by means of cosmetic surgery. Basal cell carcinoma surgery can treat this cancer and give you back normal looking skin.

Basal skin carcinoma surgery involves the removal of the tumour from the affected skin.
