What is rhinoplasty (nose reshaping/ nose job surgery)?
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure, during which changes are made in the nose, the nasal cartilages & the nasal bone, to make the nose appear more refined & aesthetically better looking. It is plastic surgery that is done to alter the size or shape of the nose. The procedure is more commonly known as nose reshaping surgery or a “nose job” or a nasal refinement surgery. This type of surgery is used to rectify cosmetic problems involving the nose like genetic problems, disease and damage done during an accident, which can make the nose appear large, asymmetrical, crooked, bent & unsightly. Cosmetic reasons for this procedure might include a bump or a dorsal nasal hump, that the person would want removed to make the nose look more appealing. Nose cartilage can also be modified to create a more appealing look. Rhinoplasty can give the face a whole new, more attractive look.
What is the process of nose job surgery?
The rhinoplasty procedure can be done either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia throughout which you will be sedated. We prefer general anesthesia for all rhinoplasties, in which the nasal bones are modified. One of two different techniques will be used. An open rhinoplasty technique will entail that an incision will be made between your nostrils at the bottom of your nose. During a closed technique, an incision will be made inside the nostrils (in the mucosal lining). The difference between the two techniques is in the presence of an external nasal scar. Surgical tools are then used to rearrange or shape bone or cartilage in order to reshape your nose. Then, the incisions are closed. After this surgery, you will find that your nose may be splinted or covered with gauze or with a cast. Then you will be awakened. You can go home after about an hour or two hours after you have recovered. Someone must be available to take you home, as you will not be capable of driving yourself home. After a day or two, the packaging comes off and then if you received a splint or cast it will come off in approximately 7 days.

What should I expect after the operation? How long will it take for me to recover?
You are not going to feel very well during the first day after the surgery. You will be informed about when you can remove the coverings, that were placed on your nose after the surgery. This can usually be done a few hours after surgery. For a day or two, you will have some aches and pains and your nose will feel sore. The anesthesia might cause some nausea. Also remember that your throat is connected to the back of your nose. This means that you may have swallowed some blood during the surgery. The blood may have entered your stomach, which may also cause nausea. It is possible that you may vomit a blackish mixture containing blood. If you, however, continue to vomit or start to get a high fever, you should contact the doctor right away. Some patients feel uncomfortable with the splint or packaging on the nose and may even become claustrophobic with a feeling of not being able to breathe. Some pain can be felt when the cast is removed. You will have to elevate your head while sleeping for at least a week after surgery. The nose will continue to be sensitive and tender for about a month and a half after surgery. Swelling and bruising will present for a few days during the recovery process.
FAQ’s (Frequently asked questions)
1. How old should I be for this procedure?
Generally, rhinoplasty should not be performed before the mid-teens or late-teens as the face has to complete its growth, especially if the rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic purposes. Apart from situations where the nose is severely disfigured, extensive surgery on the nose is avoided in children. These situations may include birth defects or damage done by an accident. In situations like this, surgery is performed to restore the growth centers of the nose that can have an impact on the growth of the rest of the face. A septoplasty may be combined with a rhinoplasty in such cases, to straighten the nose, along with cosmetically beautifying it it, a procedure called septo-rhinoplasty surgery. In teenagers and young adults, rhinoplasty can benefit a person’sself esteem. In older people, rhinoplasty can be used to give the nose and face a more youthful appearance.

One nose does not suit everyone.
3. How soon will I see results?
Your nose will look bruised and swollen for a while. In about a week, the swelling will subside. In two weeks time, after surgery, 80% of the swelling will have disappeared and most of the bruising will be gone. After this, the swelling will subside at a slower pace. About 90% of the swelling will have subsided by two months and the rest will slowly go away during the next year. During this the nose will become more defined. For about 3 weeks after surgery, the inside of your nose will still be swollen, this may make it difficult to breathe through your nose.
4. What are the risks involved in this type of surgery?
This is a generally safe procedure, although risks should not be disregarded. There are risks for reactions to the anesthetics, infection and excessive bleeding. When something does go wrong, you may lose your sense of smell for some time – This is rarely permanent. Scar tissue may develop in the nose that could make breathing difficult. Red spots or bruises may persist on the nose or fade slowly. It may also happen that a person is unsatisfied with the results.

5. What does a rhinoplasty procedure cost?
This will be dependent on where you are located and how much work will have to be done on your nose. If, for example, only the tip of the nose needs altering, the cost will be about $1500. For a complex septo-rhinoplasty, costs may be as much as USD 4500. In general, costs in India for rhinoplasty surgery are approximately 1/5th the costs of rhinoplasty surgery in the US or Europe. If you have to recover in a hospital or a recovery center, you will pay extra. Parts of the surgery may be covered by health insurance if, for instance, the person has proof of difficult breathing (i.e. for the septoplasty component).
