Information and causes of botox-masseter hypertrophy:
Masseter muscle is a masticatory muscle arising from zygomatic arch. Benign messeteric hypertrophy is an uncommon condition in which enlargement of one or both masseter musclesoccurs leading to unilateral or bilateral hypertrophy. Etiology in most of the cases is unknown. However, pain may be a symptom, but most frequently dermatologist is consulted for some cosmetic reasons. In some cases prominent Exostoses at the angle of the mandible can be seen. This usually tempts to point towardstemporomandibular joint disorders, Malocclusion, Bruxism, clenching etc.
Botox is a prescription medicine consisting of botulinum toxin produced by a bacterium Clostridium botulinum, usually prescribed by a doctor. There are many types of botulinum toxin. Botox and Dysport are the only two that are FDA approved. It is necessary to avoid other versions, which can yield unreliable and potentially dangerous results. Different other brand names for botulinum, such as Xeomin are also available. Injection of botulinum toxin type A into the masseter muscle is also another alternative. Botulinum toxin type A injections are reported to be safe and effective treatment modality in orofacial dystonies, sialorrhea, frey’s syndrome, muscular hypertrophies, etc.
Botox- Masseter Hypertrophy Treatment procedure:
Botox is used for masseter hypertrophy treatment, also known as botox jaw reduction. Botox is injected into the muscle of jaw, causing jaw reduction. Botox in a non-invasive manner can reduce the overall size of muscle, allowing for improved facial proportions.
Masseter reduction technique is a technique for facial reshaping. Botox for masseter hypertrophy blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle does not contract then, which causes the muscle to relax and soften. Botox is also used on forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet (lines around the eye) etc. Wrinkles due to sun damage and gravity, however, do not respond to Botox.
Masseter hypertrophy botox dose generally does not require any anesthesia. Botox is usually injected with a fine needle into a muscle with only slight discomfort. This requires only a few minutes. But it generally takes three to seven days to see the full effects. Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines should be stopped before treatment to reduce bruising. It is best to avoid alcohol as well.
There are some serious side effects caused by botox for masseter muscle hypertrophy. They include problems in swallowing, speaking, or breathing. These problems vary in different individuals and can happen hours to weeks after getting the injection. Some people experienced no such problem. But botox is relatively unsafe for persons with asthma. However, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and persons with neurologic diseases should also not get the dose.
The effect of botox usually lasts for about four to six months in case of treatment for wrinkles etc. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines begin to re-appear. In case of botox jaw reduction, the effects are reported to last long term.
Benefits of Botox- Masseter Hypertrophy treatment:
The treatment is relatively painless and is outpatient surgery with no downtime procedure required.
