What is cheek implant/ Augmentation?
Cheek implant surgery is a procedure that is designed to enhance the shape or contour of the mid-face and the cheek by simply adding definition and volume with the use of a malar implant, sub-malar or an extended malar implant, also referred to as the cheek augmentation surgery.
What’s the process?
The cheek implant surgery procedure is performed by making incisions that are hidden inside of the mouth on each side (the intra-oral Keen Incision). The cheekbone is being exposed by lifting the soft tissue that is overlying the cheek. This incision ensures that no scars will be visible post surgery. An Appropriately sized cheek implant is chosen according to the degree of volume replacement required in a particular patient and its type. Cheek implants provide additional contouring crossing the entire lower lid region and cheek, while other types of cheek implant provide augmentation over the lateral aspect of the cheek bone only. Once the implant has been chosen, it is then fixed in the desired area (over the bone). After placing the implants, it will then be secured by tiny screws anchored to the cheekbone – this is to prevent unwanted movement of the implant, not until the healing process takes place. Using absorbable sutures, incisions are then closed.
You may notice a moderate swelling of the mid – face for around ten to fourteen days after the cheek augmentation, it will gradually disappear in several weeks. Patients who went through cheek implant will be uncomfortable during the first week following the surgery. Since Absorbable sutures are used, it needs no removing. Expect that the face with the implant can be publicly presentable after 2 weeks.
FAQs (Frequently Ask Question)
Are there risks or complications with cheek implant surgery?
With all types of surgery, there is always some potential risk that can be associated, so also with cheek implants. There is a potential risk of temporary numbness and bruising around the cheek region – if this happens, full sensation will return within several weeks. But it is rare to have a permanent numbness after a cheek augmentation. There is also a risk that the body may not accept the implants, leading to implant extrusion. There can also be infection around the implant. If this happens, these implants have to be removed surgically, but without any long – term consequences.
What type of anaesthesia is used for cheek implant?
Deep intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is used to complete the process.
Where is the cheek implant surgery performed?
Cheek augmentation procedures are commonly performed in an outpatient surgery setting.
How long does the cheek implant surgery take to perform?
Normally cheek implant takes an hour and a half up to two hours to complete the cheek augmentation.
Are there scars after the cheek augmentation surgery?
Since the incisions are made inside the mouth, there would be no noticeable or visible scarring.
Is the cheek implant painful?
During the first week after the cheek implant, the patient will experience mild discomfort, especially while chewing.
When will I be able to exercise after my cheek implant surgery?
Normally, aerobic exercise can be resumed after two to three weeks – after the cheek augmentation.
When will I be able to return to work after the cheek implant surgery?
Usually patients return to their work seven to ten days right after the cheek implant surgery.
When are the stitches removed after the cheek implant surgery?
These do not require any removal, since absorbable sutures are used for this surgery.
What is the material the implants are made of?
Malar, Sub-malar & extended malar implants can be made of bio-nonintegrable (bio-inert) material like silicone or bio-integrable material like porous polyethylene. Silicone is softer and contours to the cheek bone better. However, chances of implant extrusion may be higher. Porous polyethylene implanes like MEDPOR are stiffer, give a higher contour and get integrated with the body tissue, but are more expensive. In general, it depends on the surgeon’s choice, as all types of implants have pros and cons.
Does insurance cover cheek implant surgery?
Cheek augmentation is a Cosmetic surgery procedure & cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by insurance, however, you can always double check with your insurer.
Who is a good candidate for cheek implants?
Patients who are bothered by the appearance of their mid – face that looks flattened. Patients who would like to have more defined cheekbones & higher cheek bones. Female patients usually have their cheeks augmented to have a more feminine look. This unwanted feature typically reflects the deficiency of the underlying bone contour (the facial skeleton). Also, as patients age, the droop in the facial tissues or cheek fat pad volume results in a further hollowing of the mid – face. Some patients undergo cheek implants to address their sunken appearance in the area between the cheek and the lower lip. These patients are considered as the perfect candidates to have a cheek augmentation. Candidates for the cheek implant can undergo this procedure as an isolated enhancement.
Though, many patients go through the cheek augmentation for an additional contour, same as with chin augmentation.
