Septoplasty Nose Surgery

  • Do you have a deformed nasal septum that causes the blockage of the air passage through your nose?
  • Does this impediment in your nose make you breathe through your mouth?
  • Do you get frequently affected by nasal infections due to this condition?
  • Are you not comfortable having this problem with your nose?
  • Is this defect very prominent and affects your appearance?

Then may be nose surgery is the choice that you may go for.

Nose surgery or Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that can reshape a distorted nose, increase or decrease its size, repair respiratory problems caused by some abnormality in nasal structures and aesthetically improves nose’s features. Common problems treated by nose surgery includes nose injury, the size of the nose and nostrils, tip of the nose (as in case of a pointed nose), and symmetry of the nose.

What is Septoplasty (deviated septum rhinoplasty)?

Septoplasty or deviated septum rhinoplasty refers to a surgical technique which is targeted at the correction of the deviation of the nasal septum in the human nose. The function of the septum is the separation of the two human nostrils from each other in your nose. Owing to this deviated septum, one of the two nostril cavities is narrowed thereby retarding the flow of air through the narrower nostril. Septoplasty can be combined with rhinoplasty (cosmetic surgery of the nose), in a procedure called septo-rhinoplasty, thereby giving the patient the best advantage: A nose which breathes well, has no sinusitis or recurrent colds and headaches and at the same time looks beautiful and aesthetic.

If you are afflicted by this condition, then Septoplasty is the preferable medical procedure for you, which straightens the nasal septum ultimately bringing about improvement in the airflow through your nose.

What is the Deviated Septum Rhinoplasty Procedure?

The medical procedure involved in deviated septum rhinoplasty begins with anaesthetizing the patient and making an incision on a side of the nose for accessing the septum to reveal the cartilage and bone lying underneath. The septum is then straightened by trimming the extra tissue of cartilage and bone while retaining enough of it for structural support. Temporary stability can be provided by using cotton or small plastic tubes. The procedure is finalized by replacing and repositioning the membrane that was removed for revealing cartilage. The whole process is completed in 60-90 minutes.

Recovery after Surgery

The septoplasty may not require the person to stay overnight in the hospital and he can return home after the anesthesia effects have worn off. To limit bleeding the nose will be packed with cotton that can be removed two days after surgery. For pain limitation, medications will be taken as prescribed by the doctor. For speeding up the recovery process, nose should not be blown and head should be held in an elevated position while sleeping. The overall recovery process is, however, slow and it can take as long as a year before the nasal tissues are finally repaired to achieve their respective new shape.

FAQs (Frequently Ask Question)

How do I know whether I need Rhinoplasty?

The procedure enhances the appearance of the nose by reshaping it in the way that you will like. If you wish to make your look larger or smaller, modify the tip of your nose or any other ways to improve its aesthetics then you should go for rhinoplasty.

What is the difference between Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is an umbrella term for all the procedures used for improving the nose appearance while Septoplasty specifically deals with the issue of correcting the deviation in the septum so it is called deviated septum rhinoplasty. A combination of both procedures can also be performed, in a surgical procedure called septo-rhinoplasty.

Will the procedure increase the length of your life?

No, since there is no scientific evidence that supports this idea that it will make you live longer, yet a successful nose surgery will improve the quality of your life by boosting up your self-esteem and confidence. A successful septoplasty will allow you to breathe better, have less frequent episodes of sinusitis, rhinitis (colds) and / or headaches.

Will the surgery improve breathing problems?

If the breathing problem was linked to reduced air flow through one of the nostrils due to crooked septum, then yes, this surgery will be helpful.

What are the risks of Septoplasty?

Well, every medical procedure involves some risks and so does this surgery. One risk is the recurrence of the deviation after the surgery and may need a revision surgery. Other common associated complications include the appearance of scars, perforation or holes in the septum wall, buildup of fluid in the nose, bleeding, discoloration of the nose, decrease in the sense of smell, and alteration in the nose shape.
