When a pen bomb burst on my face, I thought my life was finished. I felt more pain than I had ever felt in my life. At that point, I just wanted to live, live for my family, for my two young children. I wanted to get well, but with the war in Iraq, these incidents were a daily occurrence. It took me 6 months get the governmental permissions, to leave Iraq & reach facial plastic surgeon Dr. Debraj Shome in India. My doctors in Iraq had told me that if one man could make me right, it was Dr. Shome. I underwent a surgery with Dr. Shome two days after I reached India, the surgery lasted 11 hours! Dr. Shome later told me that there were so many fractured bones in my face, that he could not even count them. He put them together like a jigsaw puzzle. I also got a new nose and a false eye. When I finally looked at myself 6 weeks later, it was like in the movies - Almost like a new person was reborn! I became a celebrity in India, as news channels covered my story live. But, most importantly, I looked and felt human again. I hope the blessings of Allah give everything that he ever desires to Dr. Shome – Those hands, they are pure magic! Allah Haafeez.
