Submucosal Resection Surgery

Submucosal Resection Surgery

The functional problems with the nose can cause lot of troubles to the person. There are many problems that can happen and most common of them is obstruction in the airway. Obstruction in the airway can prevent you from breathing properly always. Therefore it is best to get this problem corrected as quickly as possible. A deviated septum can be corrected through a submucosal resection surgery.

Submucosal resection surgery is quite similar in lines to septoplasty as both aim to correct the deviated septum however the submucosal resection surgery removes the portion of the septum which is causing the problem whereas septoplasty manipulates the septum.

What is a deviated Septum?

The septum inside the nose is made up of nose and cartilage and it divides the nostrils. Ideally the septum is straight but it can be bent which can cause blockages in the airways. You will know if you have a deviated septum if you are suddenly not being able to breath properly after a recent trauma to your nose. A deviated septum can also be present because of a trauma during birth. A deviated septum can also cause chronic nosebleeds too which can hamper your day to day activities in a great way.

Submucous resection can also be used to reduce the enlarged turbinates which can cause the same problems as the deviated septum. Excessive turbinates can also cause sinusitis, aches and pains and drainage of mucous from sinus.

Endoscopy of the nose is used to determine the extent of the deviation and an expert surgeon will be able to evaluate the same and give you the correct resection operation options. In case of swollen turbinates the surgeon will advise some medications to help get the swelling down however in case of persistent symbols an operation is necessitated.

Submucosal Resection Operation Procedure

The resection is done under general anaesthesia. The process will take up to seventy five minutes to complete.

The deviated septum is corrected by shaving off the troubling bone and cartilage portion and ensures that the airways are clear. The incisions are made inside the nose and the mucopreichondrial flaps are lifted up and a portion of the turbinates is removed. Care is always taken so as to not to remove the turbinates’ completely as it will result in a dry and crusty nose. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the airway passage everything will be placed back and the incisions will be closed with the help of a packing. If the submucosal resection operation is done along with the septoplasty then splints will be placed inside the nose to provide support to the bones and the cartilage. The lining of the turbinate is left intact and only the insides are removed giving it a smaller size. A device called mircodebrider is used for the operation.

Post-operative care after the submucosal resection operation is as important as the surgery itself. It is recommended that you eat foods that are soft and cold so that it does not stress your face much. Also cold foods help stop the nose bleeds which is common problem after the operation.

After a day of the operation you will be able to eat normal foods and resume almost all of the day to day activities. Side effects of the submucosal resection operation include burning sensation because dry nose, small amout of bleeding and mucous secretion, infection etc. The surgeon will remove the packing after he or she is satisfied that the healing is complete. Any kind of external bruising is extremely unlikely after this kind of operation.

You will feel the difference of a successful submucosal resection operation almost immediately and notice how easy it is to breath in an out without have to feel any bleeding, pains or aches.
