Of course you know what probiotics are and how great they are for your gut-health! But not many know that probiotic skincare is a trend now. Skin specialists say that probiotics are beneficial when it comes to dealing with skin-related issues. The largest organ in our body, our skin, actually plays a host to a number of microbes. Dermatologist Dr Batul Patel says, “The microbiome is the family or microbes that include different types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Our skin is inhabited by over 100 distinct species of microorganism and it hosts about one million microorganisms per square centimeter.”

Cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon Dr Rinky Kapoor adds, “The balance of good and the bad bacteria in the microbiome defines the health the skin. The more good bacteria you have the more your skin will be able to regulate inflammation and serve as a strong barrier against external pathogens and other attacks. Abundance of the bad bacteria can lead to many skin problems such as acne, inflammation, sensitivity, dryness, eczema, and rosacea, wrinkles and an increased risk to skin cancer because of UV damage.”
The skin specialist states that using probiotics in your skin care routine has benefits. “They help strengthen the skin barrier and protect again inflammation which in turn means less acne, redness, or dry patches on the skin and an even skin tone.”

Probiotics are available in different types of food and yogurt is the most popular source of probiotics. “You can also take probiotics in the form of pills and tablet. They are ‘live and healthy’ bacterial that restore the pH levels and the balance in your guts. This helps the body absorb the nutrients better and gives a boost to the immune system,” says Dr Kapoor. A healthy gut also means a healthy skin with increase skin hydration and lesser signs of ageing.

Using probiotics in skin care routine balances the skin’s pH. “It restores the skin’s ecosystem and gives you back the glowing rested and stress free look. Probiotics act as strong armour against harmful microbes and foreign particles and add an extra layer of protection on the skin barrier,” says Dr Rinky. She states that it kills harmful bugs and act as natural antibiotics, promotes ceramide production that help in skin hydration, diminishes scarring, improves skin smoothness, minimizes blemishes, reduce scalp inflammation.

Do probiotic dermal formulations always work?
With recent increasing demand for probiotic dermal formulations scientists feel that there is not enough evidence known yet, that probiotic solutions work, say experts. “Hence the need for conducting better studies to show the evidence on the mechanism through which probiotics can balance the skin microbiota. In the meantime till more studies and trials become available it is best to balance the natural skin microbiome flora by following a good skin care routine plan and also following a healthy diet plan,” states Dr Patel.

KEEP IN MIND:
Probiotic products have a very low shelf life.
Avoid probiotic products in loose packaging.
Don’t buy products that have been kept out in the sun.
Consult your dermatologist to understand your skin’s requirements and the kind of probiotic product that will suit your skin type.
