Experts Tell You The Real Reason Why You Shouldnt Sleep With Your Makeup On

Sometime or the other, we have all heard that leaving makeup overnight doesn't do too well for our skin. But while most of us were always aware of the fact, we still fail to follow the cardinal skincare rule. Why? Sometimes getting that makeup just right takes so much effort and precision, that we feel it isn't worth removing so soon after all! However, while your makeup may be all things glamorous, you must certainly wipe your face clean before you call it a night. Here's why:

I GOT AN INFECTION!

"When we don’t clean our faces after a makeup session at night, it creates a breeding area for bacteria which might lead to an infection on the face", informs Dr Jaishree Sharad,Celebrity Cosmetic Dermatologist, Skinfiniti Aesthetic & Laser Clinic. This bacteria can build up and cause inflammation. Dr Simal Soin, Aayna Clinic states that clogging of hair follicles or oil glands around the eye area may also lead to a stye or hordeolums, something you certainly do not want to be dealing with.

OBSTRUCTION OF NATURAL CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS

Our skin follows natural circadian rhythms at night, a time when it is generally designed to rest and repair, for which excretion and absorption are integral. Why would we obstruct this natural process? asks Dr Kiran Sethi, Isya Aesthetics. Your skin regenerates and repairs itself at night when you are asleep, but when you leave on the makeup, this process is completely disturbed. As Dr Pooja Chhabra, Co-founder Nuskay mentions, the skin ends up absorbing all the harmful chemicals and preservatives present in the makeup instead, causing greater damage.

POOR PORES

Our skin is porous for the purpose of excreting toxins, as well as absorbing essential nutrients. When you apply makeup, says Dr Kiran, there is an obstructive layer applied on your pores which the pores automatically absorb. This traps the toxins from leaving the skin and instead blocks the nutrients from being absorbed. Additionally, when this makeup is left on overnight, this blockage is prolonged, leading to greater damage. The entire day's grime and skin's dead cells mix with the makeup and cause the skin to suffocate.

ABRUPT ACNE

"At the end it is a set of chemicals that is sitting on your skin overnight", posits Dr Rashmi Shetty, Celebrity Dermatologist, while speaking about the skin's sebum secretions mixing up with the makeup and causing acne and rashes. Further, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Cosmetic Dermatologist, The Esthetic Clinics & Fortis Hospitals, informs us that most makeup is actually made up of chemical substances which when left overnight, can cause acne and blackheads. Thereby, the makeup and the dirt built-up in your clogged pores may result in acne, incase you choose not to remove the makeup before retiring for the day.

DEAL WITH THAT DULLNESS

Skin cells get damaged when makeup is left on for long hours. Unable to regenerate themselves, the result shows up on your face in the form of dull and tired looking skin. "Clogged pores and blackheads form when dead skin cells, oil and makeup are left trapped in the pores, suffocating the skin. These clogged pores can cause acne-like breakouts and make the skin look dull and lifeless. It also interferes with the natural process of hydration & healing that takes place at night", says Dr Simal Soin.

ABOUT TO AGE

Besides pigmentation and breakouts, makeup can trap dust and pollutants that causes free-radical damage and premature ageing of your skin, says Dr Pooja Chhabra. Premature wrinkles and fine lines may begin to appear before time, and you will wake up looking older since your skin wouldn't have got any time to breathe! Interference with the healing of free radical injury may also suppress the steady production of collagen. Moreover, as Dr Rashmi puts forth, pigment makeup including blush, kajal and other eye makeup, can also seep into your skin and cause dark circles.

Overnight makeup does more harm to your skin then you can ever imagine and the skin may take days to recover! Thereby, removing and cleaning your makeup before going to bed is just as important as getting a good night rest. The simplest way to remove makeup is to use a good deep pore makeup remover, suggests Dr Rinky Kapoor. Wash your face afterwards, and consequently follow your usual night time skincare routine.
